EVIL HEROES

TIM WARREN
Tim Warren put out so many amazing lp comps which have been a massive influence on me an thousands of fans of trash rock n roll rockabilly and garage punk! Fans include the MUMMIES, THE GORIES n BILLY CHILDISH. He formed the Crypt label at just 22 yrs old in 1983 and raised the cash to release the first volume of BACK FROM THE GRAVE by selling his wedding presents n borrowin cash from friends! Front Cover art was drawn in black n white by Mort Tood, from Tims sketches (Mort was mates with Daniel Clowes who did the GHOST WORLD comic, n they met in a pUnk club in Portland) Tim did the color, and graff design for lots of his lps, with lettreaset type n fully AMAZING punk cut n paste fuck u attitude n hand drand type n logos n these covers (aswell as Desperate Rock n Roll LPS UK) are a MASSIVE influense on my design n EVIL BADGES! These GRAVES have become LEGENDARY with 11 or so volumes n records so rare theres like 3 copies or less known to exist! Id recomend u go check em out on utube (see link to one lp below). His dedication in tracking down these bands is mindblowing, going to highschools to look at old yearbooks, scanning data records in the Library Of Congress with 300 45s in his hands looking up the title, songwritters etc to find there home addresses then finding names in old phone directories n callin ALL the names that matched to see if he could find the band members for an interview and pictures! I put links below for more in depth details n interview wit da man himself so check them out if ur interested! Tim is also behind these amazing lp series LAS VEGAS GRIND, SIN ALLEY, STRUMMIN MENTAL, BENT BATTY N 'BNOXIOUS, GOD LESS AMERICAN, TWISTIN RUMBLE, HO DAD HOOTENANNY, GARAGE PUNK UNKNOWNS, I WAS A TEENAGE CAVEMAN. I will be doin feature reviews on these later on daddios n kittenios! "My whole purpose in creating Crypt was to piss on the record industry" TIM
LADY BO
With her gretsch guitar n gold pants Lady Bo was a massive style influence on Poison Ivy of the Cramps "They did all this synchronized box-step dancing, and she was in gold lame. That just burned through my brain permanently" (Ivy on seeing lady bo live in 1970)RUSSELL QUAN

Oakland Mummies & Bobbyteens drummer also in the Countbackwards & Phantom Surfers and mo! likes Margarita Pizza, Count Five, the Milkshakes, The Sonics, The Wailers, The Alarm Clocks, Norton & Kicks MAgazine. Hates Fish on Pizza! I did a bit of q&a with this lofi GOD and heres the results.
Hi Sir Russell Would you like to list your top 3 Northwest tunes for a fanzine im doing? Any label or music as long as the band is from PNW! Cool Marcus
"busy body -jolly green giants, cinderella -the sonics, take a look at me - mr l;ucky and the gamblers

Hi Russell, I wanted some recording advice, i want to get a Mummies sound, no studio crap, just live recording, did you use a cassette recorder and microphone or what? Any advice would be really appreciated!
"HI Marcus!i wish i coulod give some that sounds about right! i hated recording"
"it was experimenting everytime"
"we had /have no idea what we do"

EVIL TUNES & BUG OUTs!

GEORGIA LEE BROWN - JACKIE LEE COCHRAN
1959 Cali Cramps fav that they loved so mucho they covered an u can see why! Its got all that 50s mystical mythical vibe goin on set late at night in a sleaze bar with devils n gin and backin vocals that sound like they are song by zombies! Ivy always said she liked songs that sounded like they were sung by dead hot rodders that had died in a chicken run off a cliff and they nail it! Even the label is cool with jaguar leapin!
SONICS - MINUS ONE
"Lets go darlin your the one!" Ohhhh blast off! 1958 Rockabilly holy grailer about a guy whos girlfrend does the first space flight so he chases after her in his own space rocket!! With tons of echo er TONS! n chainsaw guitar solos n fake rocket noises n sax solos its a fuckin riot!
FLORIAN MONDAY & THE MONDOS - RIP IT RIP IT UP
WEEEEEEEE! RIP RIP RIP RIP RIPPIPPIPIPIPIPIPI! Florian Mondays ultimate 1min and 48 second punkster party starter! From Rhode Island these guys wore tight black trousers n black posted boots n collarless jackets which was the gang dress of all MONDOS who were the street gang and enemies of the posh university types called Collegiate! (As sung about in their 1st single Mondo!) "Rip it Rip it up shake it faster, shake it good now!" With wild surf solo and manic screams its a perfect surf punk crossover. The Trashwomen would have done a killer version!
They once played a gig in Palisades Park New Jersey to a 3,000 crowd n everyone went nuts, girls screaming n running up to the stage pulling on their jackets while they were playin! N the next band was drowned out by chants of "We want the Mondos!"
In da 70s Florian hired 2 guys to rip off $2m of Picasso n other art from local art museum cos he wanted them for his pad. DAMN!

THE RATS REVENGE (Part 1 & 2) - THE RATS
AAAGGGGGH RATS! This is an all time FAVE! From Ohio home the The Cramps, this crazy hilarious 1965 45 is a tribute to the gang leader of the Rats Motorcycle Gang from the ACE Beach Party Movies from American International Pictures ( home of SO many great bmovies!) The Girl members were called THE MICE!
Producer Terry Rose came up with the crazied GENIUS idea and at 1pm after 10 takes told the bandd to loosen up and fuck around and he supplied the lead vocals himself! They returned the next next for the totally improvd Pt 2. (Part 2 its nice) So many killer hilarious lyrics and shit goin on in this u gotta check it! AND a beach party fix for reference! Jack White was excited to pick up a Norton Records Repro in Camdens SOUNDS THAT SWING when visiting London for Infamous DIRTY WATER gig n when my daughter IGGY was a toddler she heard me playing this and crawlled into my tiki record room n felt tipped all over the cover n ate the end of the sleeve! I think that meant she dug it too!
Both sides appear on vol 1 of thee legendary garage punk comp series BACK FROM THE GRAVE!

DEAN CARTER- JAILHOUSE ROCK
OMG! Elvis goes to hell in outta space! Dean Carters most insane take of the Elvis classic, starts off at 100 mph with weird sci fi beeb beeb beeps and an EVIL fuzz guitar riff that sounds like electric bombs coming off with Dean screaming the lyrics like its hes a southern preacher prize fighter his last supper Pappa, god damn and just when u think it cant get any wilder the solo comes Screamin in WEWEWEWEWEEWEWEWEEEEEEEEE!
Played by Dean on his 12 string dobro baby in a leopard skin suit! Its THIS version that the CRAMPS cover on STAY SICK lp but Dean out crazies them! This was put out on Deans own record label MILKY WAY in 1967 and is the most killer garage rock n roll and recorded in his own lo fi studio built in a house! It has ukulele and accordion and clarinet in the mix too and the beeps come from a walkie talkie! Just out of this world! I first heard this on the great Best of Pebbles lp full of killer garage tracks but this one just pinned me to the fucking wall baby! Plezee CHECK IT OUT then start ur own band n make wild crazy music in ur front room like Dean! WE NEED IT!

THE BELLES- MELVIN
The Belles from North Miami Beach recorded this killer Thems Gloria rewrite and called it 'Melvin'. Turns out he was Melvin Bucci the singer for the epic VANDALS! Whos swinging 'I SAW HER IN A MUSTANG' 45 is also on TIARA RECORDS! N also covered by fellow Floridians Mike Vestro & the Cellar Dwellers (Cool Name!) its on you tube, n thou its not as killer as the OG its worth it for the amazing ep cover with Mike standin on stage with a double neck Mosorite guitar lookin like a latino Davie Allen, surrounded by gogo dancers!(Later covered by THE MUMMIES recorded live at a Pizza Parlour too cool! On the epic PLANET PIMP RECORDS)

Melvin sounds like its sung by a girl gang that gonna stick the knife in! Epic street vocal style n cool dirty backing! Available on RIOT CITY, GARAGE PUNK UNKNOWNS, GIRLS IN THE GARAGE, and even reissued recently as a 45 with cool pic sleeve! I recently discovered they did a 2nd single thats a ripping version of 'La Bamba'!

(So im guessing they were a of Latin decent) Comes complete with insane BRRRRRRRs and bird calls wailing a bit like the Tammys Egyptian Rhumba! And loft instrumentation SOOO GREAT! If I ever do a compilation LP (n I really wanna!) this would be the first track on it fo shure!
THE WHYTE BOOTS- NIGHTMARE
Epic trash girl group slayer tale of chick steals guy from chick, they fight, she kills her and the cops come and take her away! 'ITS ALL MY FAULT SHES DEAD!'A BIG fav of IGGYs as is the next one!
THE TAMMYS- EGYPTIAN SHUMBA
TOP TEN girl group screamer about having a dream about going on a date with some MUMMIES! Sisters Gretchen and Cathy Owens and their friend Linda Jones started the band in highschool & were thrown out of a local restaurant for singing along to the jukebox. "We'll be on that jukebox someday", they vowed. Has to be heard to be believed! ALL TIME GIRl PUNK ROCK! "Way down in Egypt land The mummies took our hand Oh! Ah! Oh! Ah! Egyptian Shumba! Eek eek! Ow ow!Egyptian Shumba!"
WAYNE WILLIAMS- RED HOT MAMA
WILD Tennesse 1958 Rockabilly BASHER! FAv of Lux of the CRAMPS coz he loves himself dem RED HOT MAMAS, just ask IVY WOOW! Too Cool! Sounds like it was recorded in yr front room All Desperate n wild n unhinged like the best rock n roll should be, with w WILD BLAZIN Guitar Solo WEEE!" When Shes Hot Shes Hot All Over!"
HERBIE DUNCAN - HOT LIPS BABY
Another Atomic Rockabilly Cramps Fav! In 1958 Herbs Mum convinced Marvel label boss Harry that he was the next Elvis n let him wild in the studio to record this crazy crude wacky vocal killer! On stage he would shake n vibrate so much the girls would go wild! Harry would drive a truck round selling wild 45s by blastin the tunes out into the street! Herb was later tracked down living in a trailer with his wife in Kansas n he was still swingin n vibratin! 'Lets Rock Yeah!'
VERN PULLENS - BOP CRAZY BABY
This Rockabilly beast is SO WILD that THE CRAMPS were gonna call themselves THE BOP CRAZY BABIES! and by the 2nd guitar break when he screams WELL BOP BABY!! and the band n Vern are losin there shit u can see why! In the EVIL top 10!
RON HAYDOCK & THE BOPPERS - 99 CHICKS.
"Well theres 99 chicks it be just my luck not one of the girls that i wanna fuck!"wails Rockin Ron Haydock, Pretty wild stuff in 1958!Ron, like John Waters, got his mind twisted forever when seeing Gene Vincent n the blue caps perform lookin like a bunch of wild Hoodlums on THE GIRL CANT HELP IT at the local Sinema! After that he got him a guitar in began to wail, recording this with neighbourhood teens while still in highschool!

THey recorded another 45 and a heap of other killer songs that didnt get released till the 70s includin KNOCKOUT that was covered by the killer SUPERCHARGER in the 90s.

He started a rock n roll n movie fanzine called APE, then wrote for FAMOUS MONSTERS and FANMO n wrote a ton of trashy adult books with titles like LESBIAN STRIPPER, APE RAPE & FLESH PEDDLERS, then he met the trash movie genius Ray Dennis Steckler and went on to write, produce and star in the crazied RAT PFINK A BOO BOO!

an unusual and abnormal low rent insane batman and robin rip where ron is a rock n roll singe by day and a man in a ski mask riding in the sidecar of a motorecycle made to look like a rat fighting crime at night and the film stars an APE of course!
He wrote for comic books but suffered from bad mental health and and ended up in las vegas thinkin he was a cowboy star, he died in 1977 on route 66, hit by a truck while wandering the road n was buried the day Elvis died.

THE PHANTOM - LOVE ME
THEEEE NO 1 1960 Wildest Crazed Outt of its TREE Punk Rock n Roll Record of ALL TIME! "ARAGAGAH ERP ERP LETS GO!" and off it goes like a fuckin train to the mind melting SOLO with the singer soundin like a fucking WEREWOLF! these boys aint playin! GOD DAMN I SAID GODDAMN! EVIL LPS FAV RAVES!
THE YETTI MEN - THE YETTI MEN
Right here we have a super rare and in demand 1964 Surf N Garage Frat privately pressed LP with one side split between two high-school groups from Minnesota (Home of the Trashmen, The Deacons, The Underbeats, Castaways (Liar Liar) & many more amazing acts!). With only 500 copies made it was reportedly recorded in the Gym of the high school where all the members were still students! Its The other side is like folk rock vibes and their pic shows them in a tree with a double bass looking like da OUT OF OUR TREE LP cover By THE WAILERS but im into the Double Fender Jazzmaster attack of THE YETTI MEN!

Of the tunes on the Yetti side Blue Surfer and High Himalayas as really haunting moody numbers that wouldnt sound outta place on great comps like I Can Hear Raindrops or Shutdown 66, Yep features 'Yep!' calls over cool surfy moody wipe out type riff wit sax, n sounds nice n wacky n outta tune.
Wine Wine Wine is a frat rocker with a surf trashmen sound with a kinda Trashmen Crusher sounding vocal n nifty guitar solos (The Trashwomen woulda made a slay version of this!) Break Time is a real killer surfer insert with tons of screams in whistling n shouting 'BREAK TIME!'

Finally we have My Baby Left Me, that sounds a bit like a surfy ASCOTS - SO GOOD from Back From The Grave, n like The Frogs surf lp (also reviewed here) has a mystery locked into the grooves of another world and it transports u back u a time of fun n frat parties high school bands making records for fun n beer oh yeah!
Hear 3 of these songs on the great HIPSVILLE Vol 3 lp where our heroes grace the cover and on the Norton READYMEN MEET THE YETTI-MEN split ep, I guess these guys were destined to only get one side of any record YUK!
MEXICAN ROCK N ROLL & GARAGE PUNK N SURF BLOWOUT BOOTLEG LPS!

HELLO FRIEND! EL SLAMMER here to hip u to thee most wild loco a gogo crazy sounds of Mexican Rock n Roll! In the mid 80s when Pepsi & Sherlie n Madonna N Rick Astley were dominating the air waves, there was something else much weirder and amazing bubblin in the counter culture underground swamps of usa n uk. All these amazing wild sexy cover rare unknown artist comp lps started appearing with titles like
SIN ALLEY, LAS VEGAS GRIND, DESPERATE ROCK N ROLL, BLACK ROCK N ROLL, WAVY GRAVY, WHAT A WAY TO DIE, BACK FROM THE GRAVE, GARAGE PUNK UNKNOWNS, STRUMMIN MENTAL, BUG OUT and so many more.
I got my first from TOWER RECORDS in London, it was SIN ALLEY 2 and when i got it home n played in on my portable record player in the livin room of ma mum n dads house it sounded SO FUCKIN WILD n DANGEROUS that i quickly turned the volume down, i was like scared of it, like it was forbidden voodoo! 50s n 60s comps up til now weerre so tame with history lecture type liner noted, these were like PUNK FUCKIN ROCK! Wild n sexy n unhinged like rock n roll should be and WAS! I was HOOKED!
I would go to CAMDEN with Teresa every saturday lookin for more in record shops like ROCK ON, RHYTHUM RECORDS, OUT ON THE FLOOR, and the one next to the Bucks Head pub where cool cat Bal from the STINGRAYS was selling crazy vhs b movies that id read about in KICKS MAGAZINE in da basement he has so friendly n into all the rockabilly 45s id bought at Dingwalls from Rexs Rockin Records n hipped us to thee Headcoats at the Wild Western Romms AND the Stella Club of all time FRAT SHACK at THE RAILS!!
Many of these lps were being blasted in DINGWALLS Rock n Rock Club by DJ Mouse and he would always let u see what he was playin if u asked, that place was the WILDEST back then cool london rockin girls m guys all dressed like Juve delinquents in leathers n jeans n motorcyle boots, dancing to this wild late 50s early 60s rock n roll n drinkin Shlitz Beer in cans n doin lots of drugs in the loos maybe ! hahaha!
One of the most obscure of these lps was these rare Mexican ROck n Roll lps! This stuff just has its own sound, so removed from anything that was happenin in the usa, its in its onn UNIVERSE! Not sure if its the cheap instruments, the spanish lyrics, the screamin or the tequila but its got it and i cant LIVE WITHOUT IT! So heres a rundown of the 2 lps i have n one ep ENJOY! (ELSLAMMER)
MEXICAN ROCK AND ROLL RUMBLE AND PSYCH-OUT SOUTH OF THE BORDER
Not sure how I fell into this 80s trashy lp but im glad I did! It was probably the cheap punk cut n paste n had drawn single sheet Xerox cover that pulled me in! Its LOADED with Mex 60s rock n roll & garage killers and they all sound SO MUCHO excitismo and was released on SANTO RECORDS!
Personal favs include Los Locos Del Ritmos tracks Chica Alborotado (Talahasie lassie), their wiggy El Mongol instro & the wailing screaming El Fantasma and finally the Elvis Rockin Yo No Soy Rebelde that was in a Mex rock n roll flick! (See links below to watch the guys in action!)
Los Apsons are repd with their killer Stones cover Satisfaccion & the ripping Dale Hawkin organ n guitar wailer Susie Q!
Other highlights are the slay all Pets Doors cover Hello I Love You with weird marchin boot opening n trippy lsd breaks n paint peelin guitar solo HELLO! From an lp with a cool cover on a girl looking like shes doing H in a squat!
And USAs finest PAUL REVERE n THE RAIDERS Chevy car promo 45 song, the endlessly cool gogo a rammalamma beach party starter SS 396! Cruisin the highway I get my kicks, nothin can outrun my SS 396!"
BLUE DEMONS MEXICAN ROCK N ROLL FAVORITES
This lp came out a year after in 1988 and they are all put together by the same "PHANTOM" guy who appears on the cover of this one and the next with the rest of his band dressed as Mexican wrestlers! n liner notes by Mexican Wrestler BLUE DEMON hahah (pics by Sven of Planet Pimp Records who release great 45s by the MUMMIES & TRASHWOMEN & Mo) This one starts strong with the Rockin Pitagoras by Los Hooligans (YEAH YEAH!), has the killer Pulp Fiction worthy surf beast Via Submarino by Los Apsons, a frantic train run-in downhill Buen Rock Esta Noche (Good Rockin' Tonight) by Los Teen Tops, another wiggy winner from Los Locos Del Litmo with the throbbin Pedro Pistolas (Peter Gunn) a super joyful accordion n trumpet swinging fiesta with Susie Q by Los Psicodelicos Xochimilcas
(that look like they are all wearin Beatles Wigs on the lp original cover!)
Los Hitters ripping Mary Y Juana that sounds like they were more into speed then dope hahah! Weeee! "MARUAINA!" And the frat winner Lupe (Hang On Sloopy) by Los Freddys "Come on LUPE aragggh!" This one also came out on cassette how cool!
and both lps were compiled into one CD for u modern space age types!
VARIOUS - SURF A LA MEXICANA
The 4 track ep is a Mex Surf special on REPENT RECORDS features the same 2 guys as on the Blue Demon lp With pics again by Sven of Planet Pimp!
It starts with an EVIL fave the incredible EL RAY DEL SURFIN Trashmen cover by Mexicos finest Los Locos Del Ritmo, with their trademark toy town guitar sound, in fact MOST mexican rnr n garage records sound like they are played on Poundland guitars AND IM HERE FOR IT! New up is another personal fave the sublime melow surf noir Besame Mucho by Los Wheelers (no relation to Karen of SThings hoo hoo)
Los Persuaders swing on in with the groovy LA GRAN Ola ( The Big Wave) that sounds like it was recorded ON THE WAVES! YASS! These guys were actually American and recorded a whole hot lp that was released only in Mexico where this is pulled from. Javier Batiz n his Famous Finks (!) open side dos with a barbecue party fiesta cover of of the Rivieras California Sun that sounds like when yr groovy uncle gets loaded grabs an organ n gets the party started!
Things melow down for the rest of da side with the sweet scratchy organ punchin Misier Lou Surf from there 1966 surf garage lp Discotheque A-Go-Go and Candy Vere A Mi Novia by The Cambridge Stones that are less Rockin but still wavy in da mexican way
THE AVENGERS VI - GOOD HUMOR STOMP
Just landed a repro copy of this legendary killer surf lp n it rips! Even the lame stuff sounds good! The formed cos they all loved the new surf music crazie of DICK DALE, LIVELY ONES, and personal favs THE PYRAMIDS (all with shaved bald heads!) & thee mighty ASTRONAUTS! ( I have a hot rod race trophy in my yard that was won by a member of the Astronauts!) They played all over California inc Disneyland Space Bar! n had their own light show n outfit changes and made enough dough to buy great fender showman amp, reverb units n jaguar guitars.
Lastin long after the surf craze died they recored the lp in 1966 all played live in one room in one long nite session at da Sound House Studio where the Lively Ones also recorded called Real Cool Hits that was released as an ice cream promo by the Good Humour Ice Cream company and sold from their ice cream trucks! The lp has no band name on it but u can see there name on the drum kit, as they pose around AND ON the ice cream truck with the ice cream guy holding a lolly.
Highlights include the prowling Heartbeat, a frantic Avengers Stomp, Slaughter on 10th ave that sounds like it belongs on a SIDEWALK biker flic soundtrack by The Arrows, Time Bomb, cover inc a groovy Pipeline n a killer Peter Gunn ripper, and Sahara that starts slow but again turns into a DAVIE ALLAN and the Arrows fuzz heavy metal ripper!

The lp was rare but a few tracks showed up on the amazing DIGGIN OUT surf lp (one of the best surf comps EVER!) and our heroes feature on the cover! And another lp cut TIMEBOMB was included on the also great GRAB A BOARD Stan surf lp And in 2014 Baccus re released their lp with extra tracks inc a BOSS white vinyl issue and with the Bands name finally on the cover!
THE TOADS - THE TOADS
ARAGGH! Ive falls down a TOADS rabbit hole! Just Got the fab Satan Records GET A BOARD LP for xmas from my kid IGGY POP with thee slappin MORPHEUS on it and its sent me wild! I wanna make a Toads t-shirt n start a fan club! The Toads come from Lawrenceville, New Jersey and they were the heroes of the Lawrenceville Prep School , formed out of 2 other Lawrenceville bands, Davy And The Badmen and The Chessmen and hey were named The Toads because they really jump! Yes siriee! They had just one release their self-titled LP THE TOADS on THE TOADS RECORDS! With a cool hand drawn logo I love it! And was apparently one 150 pressed makin it rarer that a surfing crow! Arrrarrr!
I always dug Morpheus since I first heard it on the comp GET A BOARD from early nineties.
Highlights are da obv BEASTLY HYPNO Morpheus, a sweet cover the the baldly EVIL heroes DA PENETRATIONS with Penetration,A tidy version of Movin and Baja which the Astronauts did so they had the same surf band heroes as the AVENGERS V1, class! A spirited number called Checkmate, a solid You cant sit down, and a cool latin type giggler called New Wrinkle, a super wet spending Money Wipe Out Whatd 1 Say melody that starts of sounding like its played by an actual TOAD ahaha! The whole lp really hangs together!
The Toads were
Guitar : Rog Hegeman-Bass : Pat Lynch-Drums : Dusty Stretch-Lead singer : Ben Kitchen
Were the surnames made up?!
But the whole lp is magic and has an innocence and other worldly appeal that is what makes these teen high school lets be Elvis, Dick Dale or the Stones band so fucking great! (Check out girls in the garage, back from the grave, stummin mental, garage punk unknowns, sin ally, desperate rock n roll lps) Ur 13 to 17 yrs old n main ur own 45s or lps n playing gigs while still at school! AMAZIN time that will never be again! The magical era of 50s n 60s teen culture I love u with all my heart!
CRAZY BEAT! WITH THE SPARK PLUGS - THE SPARK PLUGS
From Current Obsession is this weird mishmash lp by thee mysterious SPARK PLUGS and with 2 songs covered by THE CRAMPS on their epicly sexy coverd DATE WITH ELVIS LP u know they had this lp as part of there incredible record collection!
It has the original crazied CHICKEN song (titled as Painless Thoughts) about a guy goin home all excited cos his gf is cooking him chicken with chick noises, killer guitar solo n a sorta jerry lee lewis rnr sound n it belongs on the same stage as THE TRASHMEN Surfing Bird for insane vocals n zealous delivery dad! America had a lot of great chicken songs in da 50s n 60s like the epic Chicken Rock by Scott Wood, The Nite hawks Chicken Grabber (used in FEMALE TROUBLE film)
Link Wrays Chicken Run and Andre Williams supreme Greasy Chicken (its greasy!) and a zillion mo!
But for me its the sublime exotic n other worldly PILLOW THOUGHTS song that was the Inspo for the Cramps Kismiaz thats got me shook n hooked! (Yet another song with Thoughts in the title and not in the song!)The whole lp is full of other bands songs with wrong titles and not by the spark plugs at all , inc one bands songs who had released under the names The Five Pyramids, The Mello Chords n the Click Clicks haha The Spark Plugs is probably a fake name too! Bill Pearson on FB said the Sutton bough a bunch of demo tapes n unused masters some by known artists n faked the names to avoid legal probs.
Sutton also released the exact same lp as THE BEAGLE & THE FOUR LIVERPOOL WHIGS with only one Beatles cover song on it and a pic of a dif band on the cover and a dog as a cash in for Beatlemania what the fuck SUTTON HAHA! Thanks to Surfing Burt for hipin me to dis tune n starting the rabbit hole n Tape Tapio Vaisanen for the who the songs really were info!
SURF N BONGOS, SOUL, DEUCES AND EIGHTS - THE NEW DIMENSIONS!
From Beverly Hills California this killer surf band started in 8th grade high school, with mum Suzanne as manager n they released 3 lps on the budget SUTTON label, that was sold in Woolworths! They were Surf n Bongos, Soul, and Deuces & Eights n the sleeves had no band info on them, ads for other records on the back cover and only 2 members feature on one of the covers!. I was blessed to pick up 2 amazingly near minty copies of the first to lps from a uk seller! (i still need the last hot rod lp BEAST!) These lps are usually TRASHED DAD! and riding on the wave of excitement (see what I did there ho ho) I felt compelled to share the greatness of them with u splendid EVIL VINTAGE readers! SO hear goes.
SURF N BONGOS lp cover features 2 of the boys in Hawaii with some cool blondie surf bunnies and has the the sublime Failsafe thats been living in my head all month with its PEW, PEWs! ,the frantic killer Cat on a Hot Foam Board (compd on the amazing n prob thee best ever surf comp lp DIGGIN OUT that is well worth tracking down!) plus swinging beatnik versions of Intoxica n Church Key (American slang for a bottle opener for BEER!) also great is the storming Avalanche.
SOUL WITH THE NEW DIMENSIONS has a wacky cover pic that looks like a bar scene from a sleazy b movie and all the songs start with SOUL but its all surf n Trashmen stye tunes ONLY with some vocal numbers! Highlights are Monster Soul (the wicked witch is doin it on her broom stick in the air! And a headless ghost too so whats stopping you!) , Monkey Soul, Soul Time, Soul Side, Soul Flip, Soul Breakout (channeling da mighty Dick Dale!) & da big moody Big Soul Beat.
Their third lp DEUCES AND EIGHTS is hot rod surf music! Basically, there was surf music first that turned into hot rod music (sounding the same but with hot rod noises added and car tiles!) and finally a very shortly lived trend on Ski Music! (songs like Ski Bum - The Moguls, Snow Skiing - The Rangers, Ski Storm - The Snow Men, Skiers Melody - The Alpines & The Beach Girls - King In The Snow spring to mind as examples so u see America was a LOT of fun in the 60s! especially with All the crazy dance crazies too!) Loaded with hits like Chicky Run, Latinia, Soulout, Bongo Shutdown (LETS GO!) Junker, Deuce and Eights with bongo, in fact there more bongo on here that SURF N BONGOS! Tee Town, the killer Totaled, Blacktop, and the buzzing beast Rumblebee (wait thats the whole lp hahah! So u KNOW its great!!
The Splendid SUNDAZED reissue label put out a New Dimensions Best Of comp in the 90s during the epic surf revival caused by Pulp Fiction usin all those hot surf tracks in da flick, and it has lots of the HOT tracks from these 3 lps PLUS and its got some storming live tunes on it too recorded Live At The Second Annual Surf Fair / Santa Monica, California pulled from the rare Shake! Shout! & Soul! Lp on IMPACT and an unrelease song PSYCHE OUT!
Ive complied all the tracks i could find on utube so u can check em out fo yo selfves see link below!
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE SONICS WAILERS GALAXIES
This 1965 Etiquette lp is THEE garage xmas lp of all time! Etiquette Records was founded by the northwest kings THE WAILERS and they had the great idea of doing a Phil Spector type Xmas lp! Recorded in Wiley Griffith country n western studios with egg carton walls it sounds like a FUCKIN BEAST! That drum sound! (The Sonics BOOM and Wailers OUT OF OUR TREE lps were also recorded there).
The bands all guested on each others songs in the christmas spirt and the results all so sweet! I first heard Santa Claus by the Wailers on Back From The Grave Four lp n read about this lp on the liner notes (pre internet!) Then I heard Christmas Spirit by the Wailers on a Rhino Xmas LP and I waited 10 years to finally hear the whole thing when my ex wife TREE got me the cd direct from Etiquette, cos she rang up n spoke to Buck Ormsby Wailers Bassist n Etiquette Boss! I cried for real when I opened it, I was so stoked! I did bootleg copies for all my friends as xmas gifts in a shitty paper custom sleeve! Stand out tracks are theee killer Santa Claus, "I want a brand new car, a twangy guitar, a cute little honey, and lots of money, SANTA CLAUS" Don't Believe In Christmas (cos I didnt get nothin last year!), & Its Christmas by the Sonics, Christmas Spirit? Bob Dylan unrelenting cynical xmas ode (Sung by Buck), Maybe This Year, Christmas Eve by The Wailers and Please Come Home For Christmas & Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (haha u dirty reindeer) by The Galaxies but its all swinging! The og lp got pulled just after release cos the Sonics Its Christmas was a copy of On Broadway by the Drifters n they couldnt get rights to use it, making it super rare and it is removed from the 80s repress which is a shame so its one of my favs, the lighter side of Sonics singer Jerry hahaha!
STUD COLE - STUD COLE
AMAZING, RARE, BIZARRE, TWISTED WACKED-OUT ULTRA-LO-FI GARAGE-PSYCH MONSTER by OBSCURE OUTSIDER LA LONER Stud Cole, aka Pat A Tirone, a LOS ANGELES bartender. These tracks were recorded between 1963 and 1968 and then privatley pressed on his own lable Pacific Atlantic Tribune.
OMG! i cant believe this LP! Where has it been all my life! If u dig Link Wray, Elvis, n Something Weird Videos then dont MISS! The Music sounds like the soundtrack to the best wiggy beatnik 60s b/w soundtrack with lsd, pot bongos n go go dancers! Fucking incredible and I tiny bit Link, but his voice is so captivating n the whole thing has this sinister edge like Arch HAll in THE SADIST hahaha!!! According to Acid Archives Stud Cole lived in a nocturnal world of stripper girlfriends, endless cocktails and dreams of becoming a successful recording artist. I was told he was very popular with the ladies and always had one by his side. Go Check! This is my number UNO want right now! Only 100 were pressed in 1968 but it got a reissue recently which is great cos the OG press is selling for 3.5K!
THE SONICS - INTRODUCING THE SONICS
Wacky 3rd lp by these PNW Garage Gods! I used to have an original of this lp, i got it from Rock On (RIP) in Camden, swapped a stack of shit rockabilly repro 45s n got 100 quid in trade n looked up n saw this lp on the wall for 100 so u said ill have that!(i saw the Cramps goin in same shop but thats another tale)Anyhow i got it home n put it on n thought it was just a bit shit compared to the ist 2 lps on Etiqutte Records, Here Are & BOOM! n sold it later on down da line. Recently i picked up this reissue on Beatrocket and its got 4 extra singles tacked on it too, an somehow it just makes it all the more SWINGIN!
You get the Witch N Psycho from the first lp n Psycho sounds Super cool on it like its got extra echo goin on! YOU GOT YOUR HEAD ON BACKWARDS sounds like thee Headcoats! so great! it has a cover of BAMALAMA BAMA LOO n i LOVE Little Richard so thats a win!I love the stupid ballard LOVE LIGHTS, and LIKE NO OTHER MAN is a solid Killer! as is MAINTAINING MY COOL
One of the Bonus extra tracks is the stupid great DIRTY OLD MAN (that sounds like the Mummies could have recorded it), about a old guy creepin about all the girls n drinking home made punch that makes him out to lunch! and is in the same THUG ROCK style as RUDOLF THE RED NOSED RAINDEER by them on the amazing MERRY CHRISTMAS lp by Sonics, Wailers N Glaxalies that is super fuckin hard to get on lp cd or anythin but well worth it for this n the other Sonics Xmas songs SANTA CLAUS, LOVE LIGHTS (another Gerry Ballad) and the killer DONT BELIEVE IN CHRISTMAS n IGGY is well into it so u know its GOOD! and i went off on a tangent there but this lp ends with a cool version of DIDDY WAH DIDDY and is all round a winner so sayith EVIL V baby!

STOP PRESS! ACTUAL INTERVIEW WITH THE GUY THAT MADE THIS LP!
Through the powers of the universe (and Facebook!) I managed to contact the guy that put out this incredible LP from Rome Italy, Massimo Di Gianfrancesco for my first Evil Vintage Interview!
Heres what he has to say
EVIL: hey that I CAN HEAR RAINDROPS lp is incredible! u should do a vol 2!
MASS: Thank u so much i did with a friend of mine and I wrote the liner notes... I did other comps like REALITIES IN LIFE, WHEN THE TIME RUNS OUTt etc etc ...l have some more uncomped stuff waiting for a label although a mix o garage and garage psych (CANT WAIT! EVIL)
EVIL: The notes are soo great! 'ill never leave home mum n dad just keep buying me records!' and the record choices are killer! I think it tops SHUTDOWN 66! What was ur idea behind it? The other 2 lps you mentioned look GREAT n great graffics, i love the old 80s 90s style lp comp covers that are more Punky n im not a fan of these new fancy colour covers all neat! ill try n seek them out!
MASS: The concept was before SHUTDOWN 66 which I love by the mid to end of the 80's l was into moody stuff like New England teen scene even with my band Head and the Hares we were tired of the typical revival fuzztones like bands we were playin mostly moody stuff
EVIL: It works so well We need more moody emo lps of this quality! If you ever think of doin vol 2 lemmie know, im buyin!
hey i just wrote a review of the lp for my little crappy neocities web page would it be ok to add your comments to it? lemmie know!
